| This painting came into
manifestation during the time of the last French nuclear tests on Mururoa
atoll. Around the borders of this painting I have used the images of famous
carvings from Polynesia, Micronesia and Melanesia. The central demonic
creature is representative of the underground tests. It is also a reflection
of my own immense personal anger at the situation in French Polynesia at
the time. The cloud rising above the mountains behind the lagoon is in
the shape of the cloud as photographed one hour after the Hiroshima tragedy.
The title of the painting
stems from the date of the Hiroshima bombing (August 6th 1945 - Gregorian
calendar) occurs on the day of The Blue Electric Eagle in the Dreamspell
Calendar. During
the time of the creation of this painting, ironically it was also the 50th
anniversary of the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. On the day of the
50th anniversary I had been involved in a long meditation sending love
to the Japanese people. Upon arising from this meditation I found within
a very short distance of my meditation spot a dead owl that appeared to
have given up its life a very short time earlier. Consequently the owl
at the top of the atomic blast is meant to symbolize the wisdom that hopefully
comes from man's involvement with death. Also above the owl's head are
two fingers touching symbolising the danger of man playing God.Part of
the backbone and phallus of the creature is made from the symbol of the
anti-Christ as well as the shape of the bombs that were detonated over
Hiroshima and Nagasaki - a tragedy for the Japanese people and humanity.
At the bottom of the painting
beside the skulls are figures dressed in traditional Tahitian funeral costumes.
This painting is dedicated
to the victims of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki atomic weapons catastrophe. |
